For Digestive System Concerns in Pregnancy Use 1 drop Sandalwood Dilute and Apply Topically Teething: oh the fun times. The first teeth, the "eye" teeth, and the dreaded molars!!! For the first couple years of our child's life, it seems like it never stops. Babies always seem to be breaking some new tooth in, drooling and gnawing on this or that, spending hours up all night long cranky and fussy. Every parent in the world understands the fussiness and stress that happens with teething. Parents are often firmly divided into camps about what to do about it! Some parents are firm believers in teething tablets, other's in the cold wash cloth, others in amber teething necklaces, and others reach for the tylenol. Even the staunchest natural mama has reached for the meds after hours and hours of a crying, inconsolable baby (me included!). I have tired ALL of the above and then some.
I thought teething was bad with my first..... and then I had my second. Her gums would swell and bleed and her teeth would just remain "stuck" right at the point of breaking in, but would not finish coming in for months on end! I even tried essential oils that I grabbed from the health food store for my second. Nothing seemed to be working. With my third, thank the Lord, we found something that works for her. So here it is: my parental teething advice borne out of many sleepless nights and lots of trial and error. These are the essentials oils we use, how we use them, and how they work. Lavender Roman Chamomile White Fir (the Christmas tree oil) *Some people recommend Clove essential oil. But it actually is not recommended for little ones, so I personally don't recommend it for teething. Both Lavender and Roman Chamomile are very mild and gentle. Both are also analgesic and helpful for pain. I remember one night, we had friends over, and my baby girl was tired, cranky, teething, and inconsolable. We were in the middle of conversation, and I was bouncing her. Not thinking about the fact that she was teething and in pain, I just kept talking and bouncing the crying baby. Lol, where are our brains sometimes? Finally the thought filtered into my head, try the oils, you dimwit. So I wandered over, grabbed some Lavender, and applied it neat (undiluted) to her jaw line. Within about 20 seconds, she stopped crying, latched on, and fell asleep. My friends interrupted me, and were like, WHOA, what did you just put on her? Haha...yep, it worked! Ok, but what else? Sometime I find that Lavender isn't strong enough, or doesn't fit the bill. I'll also use Roman Chamomile, and love mixing the two together for a wonderful teething blend. In fact, currently, I have a roll on bottle with these two oils mixed together for teething. I'll list that recipe in a second. Roman Chamomile has been used for teething for centuries, and in Europe, they actually recommend Chamomile tea for teething. With my first I used to soak a washcloth in cool Chamomile tea and use it for my little one. Being that the essential oil is stronger than the tea, it works even better! So I always recommend Roman Chamomile as a safe and gentle teething solution. BUT...drumroll please...I had been hearing about the "Christmas tree" oil, and using it for teething. White Fir is a strong analgesic and is recommended for pain and inflammation throughout the body. It's been used for centuries by Native Americans for this use. Go here to learn more about White Fir. But I hadn't thought about it for teething. But I started reading stories of people recommending it, and stating that it worked better than Lavender for them. Soooo....we got it! And we are trying it. And so far, it is working like a charm! (Our daughter is working on her molars right now haha). So now, HOW TO USE: You have different options.
So after all of that here you go: My NEW Teething Blend: 2-3 drops Lavender 2-3 drops Roman Chamomile 2-3 drops White Fir 20-30ish drops of a carrier oil Fill a 5ml roll on bottle Use as needed by applying to jaw line, or applying a tiny bit on your finger and rubbing onto the gum. Let me know how your little one does with this blend!!! Sometimes one thing after another just seems to stack on top of us. Or maybe it's just the spilled milk, the cracked eggs strewn over the floor, and seemingly unending poopy diapers needing to be changed (ok that could by my list...or it could be work, family, or just life! When I'm starting to feel frayed, there are a couple different oil blends that I use (after I break out that pound of 70% dark chocolate I keep hidden from the kids for emergencies such as these). Ok, so after the chocolate, one of my favorite blends for stress is putting Serenity and Balance on together. Nicknamed the Liquid Xanax blend, I highly recommend it! It can also be diffused instead of applied topically. Serenity & Balance (Liquid Xanax) Blend Use 1 drop of each eo Add 2 drops of Coconut Oil Or make a bunch and save in roller bottle or spray bottle to have on hand. Apply on the wrists and neck or diffuse. The blend Elevation is wonderful either topically or diffused for lifting the feelings of stress or just being down in the dumps. And here are two more great blends to try! Their nicknames are Calm the Nerves and Calm the Witch. ;) Respiratory Strengthening Syrup 2 TBS Honey 1 drop On Guard 1 drop Frankincense 1 drop Lemon 1 drop Wild Orange 1 drop Peppermint Optional: 1 tsp of Coconut Oil Mix all ingredients. Use 1 teaspoon to 1 TBS at a time and either take as is or mix in hot water to make a soothing tea. For a young child, you can instead mix the above essential oils with coconut oil and apply to chest and throat. Recipe for Beating the "Bark" Respiratory Strengthening Blend 2 Dilute the following EO's with Coconut Oil individually, then layer them in order on the chest: 1-2 drops Thyme 1-2 drops Cypress 1-2 drops Eucalyptus Diffuse Lemongrass regularly, alternating with Breathe. (It is a good idea to alternate oils or blends of oils when you diffuse regularly, to avoid overloading). I wrote a post a little bit ago about what oils we brought to fly and travel with us. There were many times I wish I had more out with me! But we used what we had a lot as we traveled around. And amazingly, even with all the traveling, airplane rides, rest stops, long car rides, junk food, hotel rooms, etc...we didn't get sick!! The youngest threw up one night from some not-so-good food she ate, along with a bit of a runny nose in the beginning of the trip, but we all did GREAT! I think this was the first trip where none of us got sick from all the exposure plus just the exhaustion. So thankful for these oils!
BUT...we did have one episode... We did it!!! We did the crazy thing (for a second time in our lives) and moved from beautiful Hawaii to the mainland. Let me just interrupt this to say, we may be kinda quiet on the blog writing side of things for just a little while longer. ;)
We took a total of 8 bags/boxes, 4 carry on's, 4 back packs, 3 car seats, one stroller, three kiddos, and toys to spare and boarded three different flights (spending the night in an airport hotel in between two of them.) We have arrived at our first destination after those three flights, where we are spending time with my brother and TRYING to find a car to buy that will be big enough to carry all of our stuff to our final destination 12 hours away. Yeah it's been an interesting few days. So since living out of bags is my current life right now, I thought I would write about what I am doing right now...haha which is how I'm using my oils for our family's wellness in the midst of our craziness! This includes my personal list of what I took on the airplane in our carry-on. And let me just say, these are the oils we will be using for the duration of the trip, as I REALLY don't want to go digging around for the rest that is currently boxed up. So here it is, what I brought, and why: First is pretty obvious: On Guard. (duh ;)). And why? Well because I definitely don't want any of us to get sick while we travel and fly in those nice recycled air cabins! But also because three of us started feeling sick right before we were getting ready to fly. It seemed like we were coming down with a sinus cold, so I started applying On Guard topically all over all of us right away, like religiously. And so far, we all seem to be doing great! We kicked that bug by the time we got to Kansas City. Second: I actually brought one undiluted On Guard, in a small 5ml bottle, and a roller bottle of diluted On Guard, Melaleuca, Lemon, and a little bit of Oregano. The roller bottle, I used on the kids and us, on our feets, back of necks, lymph glands, etc. The undiluted On Guard, I've been saving for any stronger antiseptic use I need it for. Third: I brought K's personal blend that I've mixed for him for allergies and breathing issues. I've been rubbing it on nightly just in case on this throat, and back of neck and lower sinus areas. It is a carrier oil, eucalyptus, lavender, lemon, and a tiny bit of peppermint. Fourth: Digestzen. For any tummy issues we may encounter while eating junk traveling food or nauseousness while flying or driving. So far, we haven't had to use it. Fifth and Sixth: Lavender and Serenity, I actually didn't plan well enough ahead and buy another bottle of either of them like I thought I had. Thus I ran out last night of both! But these are my absolute necessary oils to have. One, Lavender, I use for any skin issue or rash that may pop up, or any pain or inflammation. And second, I use both for helping my kids adust to the time change and sleep. I don't have any tonight...and let's just say you can tell the difference, and I am very much regretting it that I ran out. Seventh: Breathe, because we had started getting sinus colds, and needed to combat that, but also in prevention of any respiratory illness that may try to come. I used it diluted for the first few days of our travels, and haven't needed to use it yesterday or today! Eight: Frankincense, because I really wouldn't want to go anywhere without this one. I was having some intense stress nerve pain in my face and jaw, and so I began using the Frankincense on that. It was the only thing that even made a dent in the pain. Thankfully, I haven't been having that pain at all today! I also have it available for if we encounter anything, from a bump, cut, rash, or bruise, pain, inflammation, to anything a little more serious, or just if I need a driver oil to help make any other oil I use, more potent. Nine: Melaleuca, I brought this along because I use it in my owie spray, and I had forgotten to make more before we left (the ingredients are lavender, melaleuca, and coconut oil). So I brought it to dilute and use if we need it's antiseptic properties for anything. And lastly...Clary Calm. This is my oil. I brought it along to help with my hormones, emotions, and any menstrual cramps I may get while we travel. Not leaving home without it for sure!! Now there is one oil, that I thought I had grabbed but didn't, and I regret it - Balance. And obviously, I probably could use it right about now. Oh and you know what else, Intune or Peppermint probably would have been good to add for our upcoming road trip for focus. ;) Oh well! I think we did pretty good with our carry on essential oil list. How would you change this list? September has started!!! Happy Labor Day everyone! As most of you know, our family is moving to a new state, and we will be spending the next couple weeks traveling around, visiting our team members, and doing doTERRA essential oil classes before settling in our new home in Charlotte, North Carolina area. I know I have alluded to variations of this recipe a couple of a different time before for different skin conditions, but I haven't simply written out the basic skin recipe that I use and adapt as needed. I use this for diaper rashes, skin irritations, skin rashes, eczema, fungal and yeast rashes, cuts and scrapes, and insect bites.
Here you go! All Purpose Skin/Rash Ointment: 10 drops Melaleuca 10 drops Lavender 5 drops Frankincense 1/2 cup of Coconut oil Warm up the oil and pour into a glass jar. Let cool slightly and add the essential oils. Stir, and then cover and let cool all the way. Apply as needed. If you are facing a fungal rash of some sort or a cut/scrape bordering on infection, you can add 5-10 drops of On Guard to the recipe as well. For a slightly stronger, antiseptic ointment for cuts and scrapes: Antiseptic Ointment Rub 1 glass jar 1/2 cup of coconut oil 20 drops of Lavender 20 drops of Melaleuca 10 drops of Lemon 10 drops of Frankincense 1/4 teaspoon of Vitamin E oil Heat up oil until liquid Mix in Vitamin E oil and Essential Oils once the Coconut Oil has cooled slightly. Stir and let cool all the way. Cover and store to use as needed on cuts and scrapes. You can also replace Melaleuca with On Guard, and use 10 drops of On Guard instead. Get Rid of That Wart!
Common, Flat, or Plantar Wart Recipe: Make a blend of 1 drop each Oregano and Frankincense. (Oregano is a hot oil and needs a carrier oil). Add 1/2 teaspoon of a carrier oil (more for children). Apply topically 2 -3 times per day directly on wart and surrounding area for 2-4 weeks or till wart is gone. Continue after wart is gone for 1 week to avoid recurrence. Cover with a bandage. Common Wart Recipe 2: 5 drops Cypress 10 drops Lemon 2 Tb apple cider vinegar Apply to wart twice daily and bandage. Keep bandage on until wart is gone. Molluscum warts Recipe: 1-2 drops of On Guard or Oregano topically to the bottom of the feet 2 – 3 times per day. Genital warts: Consider Melaleuca and/or Frankincense diluted with a carrier oil and applied topically 2 -3 times per day. The varieties of virus that cause warts typically take 2 – 4 weeks to eliminate and the topical application should continue at least a week after they appear to be gone. For women soaking the end of a tampon can be used for genital warts in the pelvic region. |
