In my previous post, Essential Oils in Pregnancy - Part 1, What is Safe? I talked about essential oil safety in pregnancy, what oils are considered safe, and what oils are considered unsafe. In this post I will give some recipes and blends for pregnancy discomforts, for birth, postpartum issues, and for newborn care. Remember to always dilute for pregnancy at 1% and to also highly dilute at .5% or 1% for newborn use.

When you start talking about using essential oils in pregnancy, people often get divided into camps. One camp is the “don’t touch them at all” camp. Another camp is the “use any that you want as long as it is certified therapeutic grade”. And then there’s all the camps in between. If you simply google essential oils in pregnancy, you’ll find conflicting lists of safe and unsafe oils, and conflicting messages communicated. After researching different perspectives and reports, I am sharing what I have found in my own research, including the stance of the International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists and the National Association for Holistic Aromatherapy (NAHA). In this, Part 1, I will quote from a few well known aromatherapists, and list safe and unsafe essential oils.
In Part 2, which I will post tomorrow, I will give some basic essential oil remedies for different pregnancy and labor situations. Eucalyptus Radiata, this oil is commonly known as Black Peppermint Oil, contains 60-75% 1, 8 cineol. Eucalyptus is a pretty well known oil and has long been known by herbal practioners for its insect repellant properties and associated maladies such as fevers and respiratory conditions. Beyond this the antibacterial and antiviral properties make it beneficial in not only treating symptoms but underlying causes as well.
The thought that we can actually use only all natural, completely organic, plant derived products in order to keep our body in a state of wellness and health is a tempting one, but is easy to dismiss as exaggerated or maybe a marketing ploy. Really? Do these essential oils really work to help keep my body in a state of wellness?
Here's one reason it's possible and you may want to think about doing just that. Welcome to all from the Tega Cay Fall Festival who are visiting Alaneo Essentials for the first time! This may be during menopause, premature menopause, or induced menopause. They can also occur at times other than menopause if there are significant changes in hormonal levels. This blend was recommended to me by some friends who have used this to help with their hot flashes. Hot Flash Blend 2 Drops of Clary Sage 1 Drop of Yang Ylang 1 Drop of Peppermint 1 Drop of Geranium 1 Teaspoon Carrier Oil Apply twice daily to the bottom of the feet, behind the ears, and the back of your neck. I recently wrote a post about Arborvitae, the brand new essential oil from doTERRA. But I recently found out some more good stuff about this amazing oil. So here we are, Melaleuca, known for it's antifungal properties, was pitted against Arborvitae with Staph and Candida, and here are the results. In case you are curious about the chemistry of Arborvitae, this paragraph is for you. Tropolones have a unique chemical structure (7 sided carbon ring) that makes them strongly bioactive. The benefits of tropolones include anti-viral, anti-fungal, cleansing, cell protecting, insect repelling, regenerative properties. doTERRA did some experiments comparing Arborvitae oil to Melaleuca oil in their lab and found Arborvitae to be effective at concentrations much lower than Melaleuca. They tested it against Staphylococcus Aureus and Candida Albicans. The Arborvitae oil prevented growth of both Staphylococcus and Candida at 2%, 5%, 10% concentrations when it took 20% concentration for Melaleuca to produce the same result. Here it is with Staph: Here it is with Candida: Here is a informative article by Dr. Hill discussing the therapeutic benefits as well as research and studies on Arborvitae oil. When Arborvitae essential oil was tested, it was found to possibly help with the Hepatitius B Virus, Hepatitus C, HIV, HIV-1 as well as hand foot and mouth disease. Excited? I am! I know that I'll be replacing my Melaleuca with Arborvitae when dealing with any staph or fungal issues. :D Digestive System Essential Oil Protocol 1

For Digestive System Concerns in Pregnancy Use 1 drop Sandalwood Dilute and Apply Topically Teething: oh the fun times. The first teeth, the "eye" teeth, and the dreaded molars!!! For the first couple years of our child's life, it seems like it never stops. Babies always seem to be breaking some new tooth in, drooling and gnawing on this or that, spending hours up all night long cranky and fussy. Every parent in the world understands the fussiness and stress that happens with teething. Parents are often firmly divided into camps about what to do about it! Some parents are firm believers in teething tablets, other's in the cold wash cloth, others in amber teething necklaces, and others reach for the tylenol. Even the staunchest natural mama has reached for the meds after hours and hours of a crying, inconsolable baby (me included!). I have tired ALL of the above and then some.
I thought teething was bad with my first..... and then I had my second. Her gums would swell and bleed and her teeth would just remain "stuck" right at the point of breaking in, but would not finish coming in for months on end! I even tried essential oils that I grabbed from the health food store for my second. Nothing seemed to be working. With my third, thank the Lord, we found something that works for her. So here it is: my parental teething advice borne out of many sleepless nights and lots of trial and error. These are the essentials oils we use, how we use them, and how they work. Lavender Roman Chamomile White Fir (the Christmas tree oil) *Some people recommend Clove essential oil. But it actually is not recommended for little ones, so I personally don't recommend it for teething. Both Lavender and Roman Chamomile are very mild and gentle. Both are also analgesic and helpful for pain. I remember one night, we had friends over, and my baby girl was tired, cranky, teething, and inconsolable. We were in the middle of conversation, and I was bouncing her. Not thinking about the fact that she was teething and in pain, I just kept talking and bouncing the crying baby. Lol, where are our brains sometimes? Finally the thought filtered into my head, try the oils, you dimwit. So I wandered over, grabbed some Lavender, and applied it neat (undiluted) to her jaw line. Within about 20 seconds, she stopped crying, latched on, and fell asleep. My friends interrupted me, and were like, WHOA, what did you just put on her? Haha...yep, it worked! Ok, but what else? Sometime I find that Lavender isn't strong enough, or doesn't fit the bill. I'll also use Roman Chamomile, and love mixing the two together for a wonderful teething blend. In fact, currently, I have a roll on bottle with these two oils mixed together for teething. I'll list that recipe in a second. Roman Chamomile has been used for teething for centuries, and in Europe, they actually recommend Chamomile tea for teething. With my first I used to soak a washcloth in cool Chamomile tea and use it for my little one. Being that the essential oil is stronger than the tea, it works even better! So I always recommend Roman Chamomile as a safe and gentle teething solution. BUT...drumroll please...I had been hearing about the "Christmas tree" oil, and using it for teething. White Fir is a strong analgesic and is recommended for pain and inflammation throughout the body. It's been used for centuries by Native Americans for this use. Go here to learn more about White Fir. But I hadn't thought about it for teething. But I started reading stories of people recommending it, and stating that it worked better than Lavender for them. Soooo....we got it! And we are trying it. And so far, it is working like a charm! (Our daughter is working on her molars right now haha). So now, HOW TO USE: You have different options.
So after all of that here you go: My NEW Teething Blend: 2-3 drops Lavender 2-3 drops Roman Chamomile 2-3 drops White Fir 20-30ish drops of a carrier oil Fill a 5ml roll on bottle Use as needed by applying to jaw line, or applying a tiny bit on your finger and rubbing onto the gum. Let me know how your little one does with this blend!!! |
