As the holidays approach, and many of us start thinking about gift giving, some of us are trying our hand at DIY gifts using essential oils. I am asked a lot about carrier oils. In this prior blog post, I wrote about the different types of carrier oils, and gave a dilution ratio chart for infants, children, and adults. Here's one more quick cheat reference chart on dilution ratios. Remember for infants, 0.5% is suggested, and for children, 1% dilution ratio is suggested. Adults can use 6%. But in this blog post, I wanted to highlight what essential oils and carrier oils would be more specific to different skin properties, types, and conditions, specifically for using the oils on our face. First Essential Oils: Different essential oils are more beneficial for different skin types and conditions. Here is a quick reference chart to help you decide what essential oils to add to your carrier oil. As you can see, if you are making your face oil to assist in mosturizing dry skin, you would lean towards oils such as cedarwood, clary sage, jasmine, and geranium. If you tend to have very sensitive skin, geranium, jasmine, and lavender are beneficial for you to use. If you have oily skin, there are quite a few options, including, bergamot, frankincense, helichyrsum, and melaleuca. And if you are looking for properties pertaining to wrinkles, clary sage, helichyrsum, geranium, lavender, and lemon are some of the suggested oils. Carrier Oils: Carrier oils are more beneficial for certain skin types in the same way because of their different properties. So as we make different DIY gifts, I thought this reference chart would be a helpful tool in deciding what carrier oil would be best for that face cream or moisturizer you are making! Properties of Carrier Oils:
Apricot Kernel Oil
Avocado
Coconut Oil
Evening Primrose
Grapeseed Oil
Jojoba Oil
Kukui Nut Oil
Macadamia Nut Oil
Neem Oil
Olive Oil
Rosehip Seed Oil
Sea Buckthorn Oil
Sunflower Seed Oil
Tamanu Oil
Enjoy Your OILS!! Cold and Flu season is a time of year many of us dread! I know I used to dread it!!! The colds just never seemed to stop for myself and the kids! The LONG SLEEPLESS nights of fussy, stuffy, feverish little ones!
SOUNDS LIKE FUN TIMES, RIGHT? NOT! But how does one protect themselves with hiding in a bubble all winter long? Or without spending many hours of your life at the doctors and the pharmacy getting over the counter medicines that doesn't really work. 1. Of course the Basics, let's start with the obvious: Eat healthy, nutrient dense, mostly raw foods. Get plenty of rest, exercise and fresh air where possible. Wash your hands often. Clean the busy and often touched areas of your house (i.e. door knobs and light switches). 2. Mist your families bed sheets with a mist of essential oils before bedtime. 10 drops of Protective Blend (On Guard), Lemon, Melaleuca, or some other essential oil with a ¼ cup of water in a spray bottle – shake well. 3. Clean regularly around your home, use essential oils to clean. Cleansing Blend, Protective Blend or Lemon in a spray bottle used for cleaning will assure pathogen free surfaces. Cleanse in between hand washes and when you are out and about. That’s when I pull out my little spray bottle with lemon oil and water. Spray down shopping cart handles, your hands, restaurant tables, etc. Great way to cleanse on the go. Also, takes care of any sticky kid messes great! It smells divine too. I LOVE lemon oil for helping to keep hands clean in-between washes with soap. 4. Homemade Elderberry syrup, Homemade Garlic Lemonade, and Homemade Kid-Friendly Herbal Infusion. Click here for the recipes for these things! We all know how much immune boosting strength garlic and lemons have, thus garlic lemonade is one of my favorites. Plus, it tastes great and the kids love to drink it! We drink it regularly even when we are not fighting a cold. I also like to give my kids my homemade elderberry syrup daily during cold and flu season as well Elderberries have amazing flu fighting properties. And if we do happen to begin to fight something, the cold and cough soothing herbal infusion is AMAZING! 5. Homemade Throat drops and Syrup. There are lots of tried and true home methods for soothing throat. Honey + lemon comes to mind. There are some great oils that can support healthy respiratory function as well. Eucalyptus oil is a great one. Sometimes a little bit rubbed on the feet or chest is enough to see some benefits. Just a note that doTERRA sells throat drops which are awesome to have around or keep in your bag for emergencies. They are a great line of defense to help boost the immune system. If you want something a little more DIY, try these recipes: Natural Honey Throat Syrup 4 drops Lemon 2 drops Clove 2 drops Thyme 2 drops Ginger 1 drop Chamomile 1 drop Fennel 4 tbs Raw Honey 2 cups Distilled Warm Water Dissolve the honey in the warm water. Don’t overheat. When combined and cool, add the essential oils. Pour into a amber glass container and store in the fridge. Shake before use. Take a spoonful or so when you need relief. Repeat often. Honey Throat Drops 1 1/3 Cup Raw Honey 1 1/2 Cup Water 20 drops On Guard Stevia Powder Candy Thermometer Mound stevia in a pie plate. Create rounded indentions in the stevia with the back of a small spoon. Set aside. Bring honey and water to a boil. Continue boiling until hard crack stage. Take pan off of the heat and stir. Add Protection blend Essential Oil. Spoon drops of the mixture into the stevia molds. Let cool to touch. Roll drops around in the stevia till coated. Wrap in parchment paper. 6. Peppermint, Lavender, & Lime are great cooling, relaxing, and soothing oils. Apply them down the spine, on the feet, to the temples, and the back of the neck. Remember, small amounts, applied often works best. A tension blend containing oils such as peppermint, lavender, frankincense, chamomile, etc. is a great oil blend to have on hand for soothing localized tension. Experiment and see what works for you. When you are extra tense, you can also try to use a Soothing blend, or Wintergreen. Apply topically but don’t forget to use them aromatically too. * I don't recommend Peppermint for little ones under 2. 7. Boost Immunity with On Guard. Dilute On Guard with a carrier oil and rub on feet, back of neck, and spine. For kids under 2 years old, you can use diluted lemon, melaleuca, and lavender and rub on the feet, spine, and behind the ears. 8. Diffuse the air that you are working, living and sleeping in. A essential oil diffuser in your home and office will do just the trick. All essential oils have antibacterial and antiviral properties. So in theory you can use any essential oils, for cold and flu prevention, to kill those cold and flu germs in the air. BUT I AM GOING TO SHARE A FEW OF MY FAVOURITES FOR COLD AND FLU PREVENTION
9. Immediately begin an essential oil protocol at the first sign of a sore throat or any other symptom. For children that can’t take internal treatments, use appropriate oils on their feet, chest and using the spinal treatment. (Don't give children oils internally). 10. Make your home a happy place, free from stress. A haven with kind words and positive thoughts. Make a place of safety and refuge. As storms rage on, have your home be a house of prayer, gratitude and love. These are all things we can do that will create of synergy of protection for your home and family. Now what do we do if we find ourselves faced with symptoms of the flu? At the first indication of a symptom, strike back quick and hard. We only use doTERRA essential oils. Why? They are guaranteed to be sourced from the area’s in which the are indigenous to. They are organically grown. Harvested by correct methods and at the correct time. Distilled by professionals at the correct temperature and pressure. Finally each batch is tested by independent labs for correct constituents content to guarantee efficacy. These methods are key to insuring safety and effectiveness. 1. “The BOMB”. I’m sure you’ve heard of this combination by now. Even if so, it’s worth repeating the recipe: 4 drops Lemon 2 drops Oregano 2 drops Melaleuca 2 drops On Guard Place in an empty gel capsule and swallow. Remember, small amounts of essential oils applied frequently is the best way to use them. For kids or those who can’t or don’t want to swallow homemade capsules, you can add the drops to a roller bottle and fill it the rest of the way up with Fractionated Coconut oil. Apply to the bottoms of the feet. OR Fill empty capsules of 8 drops Oregano, 5 drops On Guard and 3 drops Frankincense. Then take the capsules internally twice daily. (this is for adults only with symptoms of the flu.) 2. Gargle twice daily with 1 drop Oregano, 2 drops On Guard, and 2 drops Lemon in 1 or 2 tblspns of pure water. (again only for adults). 3. Oil pull daily with 1 tablespoon Coconut Oil, 2 drops Oregano, and 2 drops Melaleuca. Pull for about 10 minutes before expectorating the blend. Then brush your teeth and rinse out your mouth. This mixture may be hot. If it’s too hot, reduce the Oregano to 1 drop and add a drop of Lemon. You can also consider Cinnamon, Cassia or On Guard instead of Melaleuca. 4. Drink 1 drop each Lemon and Peppermint in your drinking water and drink it often. Staying hydrated is an important part of assuring the oils work effectively in our bodies. 5. Consider other protocols for specific symptoms. Respiratory Blend (Breathe), Lemon, Marjoram to the chest, neck and back for respiratory issues; Lemon, Peppermint, or Breathe to the sinuses for sinus issues; Digestive Blend (often in a capsule with Frankincense) for nausea or digestive problems. Oregano or Cinnamon and Lemon as a gargle for sore throats. 6. Diffuse the air that you are working, living and sleeping in. A FEW OF MY FAVORITES FOR COLD AND FLU PREVENTION
7. Have your spouse give you an aromatouch massage! Look up the method on http://www.aroma-touch.com and use Virgin Coconut oil as a carrier for the recommended oils. Add the Respiratory Blend (Breathe) and Thyme to Inflammation. Oils that are an important part of your germ fighting arsenal and that are good to have around are; Protective Blend (On Guard), Oregano, Cinnamon, Myrrh, Thyme, Basil, Clove, Lemon, Peppermint, and the Massage Blend oils. These essential oils have the ability to kill bacteria, fungi and viruses, get down into the cellular level and make things right. Essential Oils are proven natural combatants to boost the immune system and strengthen our bodies in health! For my seven favorite oils to use with my children, visit this blog post. doTERRA’s Business Opportunity doTERRA offers one of the most generous business opportunities of its kind. Rather than choosing to market and advertise through retail stores, doTERRA decided to go with a more non-traditional method, which really focuses on educating and empowering their essential oil customers. This is a sharing business, where compassion, testimonies, and personal results is the driving force bringing growth. doTERRA allows you, as a Wellness Advocate, to have a home-based business, which focuses on sharing your essential oil education with others, while earning you free product, supplementing your income, or even replacing your income altogether to improve your standard of living. As we get into cold and flu season, here are some good recipes to get rid of that sore throat quickly!
One note, lol, for the Oregano, be prepared, it is a HOT oil!!!! I highly recommend putting it in a capsule instead of in water. Also if you use it topically, make sure to use a high dilution of a carrier oil! :D For all oils, put them in a 2%-6% dilution ratio for adults, and for kids, a 1% dilution ratio. Use a good quality carrier oil like coconut oil! I haven't had a sore throat in a long time, but if I ever even start to feel a tingling, I just drop one drop of On Guard on my tongue and then apply it topically, and by the next morning, it is gone. Another great option, put the On Guard or Lemon in honey instead and take that or put the honey in warm water to make tea! Ok, I have some great news to share! If you have been thinking about enrolling in doTERRA or have been on the fence about trying out business building, read on! I decided to create a promotion in order to make it easier for all those who I have talked to who are interested in trying doTERRA, but feel it may not be possible due to finances or other barriers. First just so you know- LRP means Loyalty Rewards Program or monthly auto shipped order. PV means Product Value points. $1~1PV. What I am going to do is this.... After you enroll with an enrollment kit, for the next three months I will pay for $100 of your LRP (autoship) order, for each month that you enroll another person who joins with at least a 100PV LRP order. This is not a doTERRA special, this just for joining my team:) Kind of like Oprah telling the audience, "By the way, you all have an amazing gift bag under your seat" kind of thing. In this way, anyone who is not enrolled but would like to do the business is not hindered by the fear of paying the monthly autoship order. Why do I want to do this? I sincerely love doTERRA essential oils and their products. I use them all around my house and in my daily life. I blog about them. I believe in the business as a great opportunity and want to spread the word to as many as I can. Yet, I have talked to many moms or families who feel they would love the oils or would like to take the jump and try the business but are unsure if they can afford the commitment. So with my own money I’m doing this to make it possible. What it would look like is this: Step 1: You would enroll with any enrollment kit: i.e. the Family Physicians Kit. Now you are a wholesale member with doTERRA and able to receive their wholesale prices for the next year. Step 2: You would then join the monthly Loyalty Rewards Program with at least 100PV order (again, PV means product value. A $5 oil is worth 5 PV). The Loyalty Rewards Program is the monthly buy program; you get 10% product credit back for the first three months you are in the program (you pay $100 in the program, you get $10 back). This goes up throughout the year, and by 13 months of being in the program, you are receiving 30% back EACH MONTH! Say you enrolled in November, you would set up your first 100PV order to go through in December. Step 3: You enroll someone in your first month (i.e. November.) They also set up a 100PV Loyalty Rewards Order (LRP). As a result, we give you $100 worth of you first (i.e. December) Loyalty Rewards Order, FREE! Step 4: In your second month, (i.e December), you do the same thing. You enroll someone and set them up for a Loyalty Rewards Order of 100PV for the month of January. WE give you your following month's LRP order of $100 worth for FREE! Step 5: In your third month, (i.e. January) you enroll someone again, and set them up for a February LRP order of 100 PV. We pay for $100 worth of your February's LRP! At that point you will have enrolled with one kit, gotten paid from your friends’ orders the FastStart Bonus from doTERRA which is 20% of their orders, have 30 product credit points earned you can spend on more oils (remember you receive 10% product credit back from being in the LRP program each month), and $300 worth of doTERRA essential oils for free from us! Plust at this point you will be receiving a $50 check from doTERRA each month from having three enrollments underneath you on a 100PV LRP! Total:
For those of you like me who need pictures. Here you go! If you then decide you do enjoy being a business builder on my team and love doTERRA as much as I think you will, you can continue building and I’d be happy to help you build! The great thing about doing this promotion this month, is doTERRA is also doing their LRP promotion until November 15th. So if you enroll and sign up for a December LRP by November 15th, then you will also be sent a free Lifelong Vitality Pack (the trio of supplements) in the mail free, from doTERRA. Two for one!! Have questions about the Loyalty Rewards Program? This short video on it is a great place to start. So if you are interested in this promotion, make sure to contact us soon at [email protected]. This is a limited promotion only! November, the month of Thankfulness, is here, my second favorite month of the year, second only to December! I love this month, Thanksgiving, and all it entails, thankfulness, family, warm memories, holiday movies, surf days (lol in Hawaii), football games with the family in the fall leaves, snow ball fights....I have a lot of great memories of November!!! I'm excited to see what new memories this November will bring. I'm also excited because doTERRA has released their Holiday Catalog this which includes the special Holiday Joy Essential Oil, a blend they only release for a limited time during the holidays. That's over a $70 value free! Just a quick personal note on the Lifelong Vitality Pack, this supplement has been amazing for my personal health, including my endocrine system and adrenals and womanly cycles.
