I brush, I floss, I cut most the sugars out of my diet, but every time we go to the dentist Sheena spends about 5 minutes getting her teeth checked and cleaned and I'm back there for 45. It's not fair, but hey life's not fair sometimes! So even though Sheena obviously doesn't need it we're both going to be focusing on cleaning up our mouths. We have been doing a lot of research on healing our teeth over the last year or so. There is very little main-stream research done on some of the methods we're going to try out, but Dr. Weston Price has been a forerunner on researching this, and we have looked at his information and studies as well at some other lesser known research.
Studies have found that the presence of minerals in the diet, adequate fat soluble vitamins (think A, D, E, and K, and how the body is absorbing them affect the health of our gums and teeth. Also Phytic Acid which is found in Grains, Legumes, Beans, Nuts and Seeds has been found to hinder nutrient absorption and thus people with diets high in Phytic Acid tend to have more cavities and gum disease.
Can it really happen? Can we really heal out teeth and gums? Well we have heard great testimonies from friends that they were able to heal their cavities and heal their gums. So we are willing to give it a go! Anecdotally the methods we'll describe have benefited or caused:
- Less Sensitive Teeth
- Whiter teeth
- Less bed breath
- No cavities
- Cavities Healed
- Gum Disease Healed
So that's our goal, we will see how this goes! We are going to give it two months and then report what happens.
The Suggested Diet and Supplements to Help Heal Cavities and Improve Oral Health
- Cut out or limit foods that contain phytic acid which include grains, beans, nuts, seeds, and legumes.
- Limit foods containing even natural sugars or starches, which feed plaque.
- Eat a LOT of healthy fats including coconut oil and organic butter.
- Homemade bone broth for added minerals.
- Take Fermented Cod Liver Oil or Fermented Cod Liver Oil and Butter Oil Blend. This is one of the main supplements recommended by Dr. Price from his research.
- Vitamin D- The other main supplement by Dr. Price, and found in studies and other studies to help heal teeth and gums.
- Coconut Oil- organic, unrefined coconut oil is best, you can add 1/4 to 1/2 cup a day in smoothies or food, and also use it to oil pull (more on that in another post).
- Gelatin
- Magnesium/Calcium supplement.
- Raw Milk can also be very helpful and is recommended by Dr. Price to help heal our teeth.
So WHAT exactly are we going to do over the next few months?
Well we are going to limit sugars and grains, which we are already doing, as well as take our Fermented Cod Liver Oil and Butter Blend (I buy online), Vitamin D, Gelatin, Magnesium/Calcium and eat lots of good fats.
And:
- Brush with homemade remineralizing toothpaste daily (see our next post for our recipe)
- Possibly swish with both calcium and magnesium powders dissolved in water daily to help provide minerals and to keep the mouth alkaline.
- Oil Pull with a drop of Peppermint and On Guard to cleanse our mouth of toxins, plus get rid of bacteria in the mouth and help to prevent Plaque (peppermint, rosemary, and eucalyptus has been shown to prevent plaque and heal gums in studies (http://aromaticscience.com/phytotherapeutic-inhibition-of-supragingival-dental-plaque/ & http://aromaticscience.com/effect-of-eucalyptus-essential-oil-on-plaque-and-gingivitis/)
- And Rinse with our DIY Mouthwash (see post for recipe) which also has On Guard, Eucalyptus, Peppermint or Rosemary to help prevent bacteria and plaque
So that's it! We'll see how it goes! Let us know if you've tried these things or are going to, and how it works for you! We'd love to know.
