Homemade Elderberry Tincture
Elderberry Syrup Recipe:
- 3/4 cup dried black elderberries
- 4 cups of water
- 2 T (or a couple inches worth) fresh or dried ginger root
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp cloves or clove powder
- 1 cup raw honey
Pour water into medium saucepan and add elderberries, ginger, cinnamon and cloves.
Bring to a boil and then cover and reduce to a simmer for about an hour until the liquid has reduced by almost half. At that point, remove from heat and let cool enough to be handled. Pour through a strainer into a glass jar or bowl. When it has cooled down, add the honey and stir well.
When honey is well mixed into the elderberry mixture, pour the syrup into a quart sized mason jar or 16 ounce glass bottle of some kind. Store in the fridge and take daily for its immune boosting properties.
Standard dose is 1/2 tsp to 1 tsp for kids and 1/2 Tbsp to 1 Tbsp for adults. If the flu does strike, take the normal dose every 2-3 hours instead of once a day until symptoms disappear.
Garlic Ginger Lemonade
This recipe is adapted from Dr. Aviva Romm:
- 2 Quarts of Boiling Water
- 8 Medium cloves of Garlic, peeled and chopped
- 2 T Ginger or a couple inches worth, peeled and chopped up
- 2-4 Lemons depending on how strong you like it (you can also do 4 drops of doTERRA Lemon Essential Oil, which is powerful and soothing, but doesn't have all the Vitamin C that fresh lemon has)
- 1/2 cup Honey (or Maple Syrup for under 1 year old) or to taste
(do NOT use sugar, as it is an immune suppressant)
- Place garlic and ginger into water in a saucepan
- Bring to Boiling
- Steep for at least 30-45 mins
- Strain out Garlic (optional).
- Let the mixture cool down
- Squeeze the lemons and add the juice
- Add the honey to taste
- Pour into a 1/2 gallon glass jar and store in the fridge
